João Trabulo

Lives and works in Lisbon, Portugal. Started with the producer Paulo Branco in Gemini (Paris) and Madragoa (Lisboa) with the directors Manoel de Oliveira, João César Monteiro, Robert Kramer and Pedro Costa.
Creates in 2004 Periferia Filmes, which produces and distributes independent cinema, believing and supporting the creative diversity of the new Portuguese cinema. Produced work from João Canijo, Ben Russel, Gabriel Abrantes, Maya Rosa, Jean-Luc Bouvret among others.

As a director, Jõao Trabulo’s resumé counts with a number of films, such as the documentary LH: Saber Ver, Demora (Knowing how to See Takes Time) about the painter Fernando Lanhas; the short film A Arte da Fuga (The Art of the Escape), shot in super 8 and 16mm, that tells the director’s artistic representation and personal universe; Durante o Fim (During the End), a mix of  fiction and documentary about the work of the portuguese sculptor Rui Chafes; the feature film Sombras – Um filme sonâmbulo (Shadows – a sleepwalking film) about the poet Teixeira de Pascoaes and about ten other video projects. His most recent feature film Sem Companhia (No Company) had its world premiere at IndieLisboa’10 – International Independent Film Festival and win AIP/KODAK Best Image Award in a Portuguese Feature Film , and its international premiere at the Torino Film Festival as a ‘Cult Award’ nominee. After the international premiere was in the international competition in the bigest festival of documentary films in France – Cinema du Réel and in the International Film Festival of Montevideu.

Producer on the Move 2011, João Trabulo was nominative by the Instituto de Cinema de Audiovisual (ICA) to represent Portugal at the meeting of filmmakers organized by European Film Promotion (EFP) at the Festival Internacional de Cine de Cannes.
